Namaste. Welcome to Powerfully Present, a podcast where we embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery through the practice of yoga. I am your host, Cristal Sharma, and I am thrilled to embark on this new adventure with you.
In this inaugural episode, I want to delve into the main themes that have shaped my own journey and have led me to this moment. Let’s explore the power of being present and how it can transform our lives.
Growing up in a South Asian family, yoga was an integral part of my upbringing. I witnessed my father’s dedication to yoga, practicing it diligently before the break of dawn. The teachings of the Gita and the principles of detachment and the law of action were ingrained in our household. Little did I know that these early experiences would lay the foundation for my own path in yoga.
As a first-generation Indian American, I often found myself straddling two worlds. The challenges of navigating between my Indian heritage and American culture were not always easy. I often felt torn between embracing my Indian identity and assimilating into American society. This struggle led to moments of confusion and self-doubt, as I grappled with my sense of belonging.
During my college years, I faced a series of medical misdiagnoses that culminated in a gluten intolerance diagnosis. This experience became a turning point in my life, as I realized the importance of prioritizing my health. Yoga became my refuge during this challenging time, providing physical and mental healing. It was through yoga that I found the strength to rebuild myself and regain my confidence.
While pursuing a career in finance, I simultaneously immersed myself in the world of yoga. I took every opportunity to deepen my practice, attending workshops and trainings whenever possible. Balancing my day job as an accountant with my passion for yoga, I gradually found my calling as a yoga teacher. In 2009, I took a leap of faith and opened Soul Power Yoga with my sister, creating a community that embraces and supports each other on our individual paths.
In our fast-paced world, we often associate power with force and energy. However, my journey has taught me that there is power in stillness, acceptance, and being present. Whether we are facing health challenges, navigating relationships, or seeking personal growth, being powerfully present allows us to find peace, joy, and contentment.
As we enter the digital age, the world of yoga has expanded beyond the confines of a mat and a studio. The internet has become a platform for yoga practitioners to connect, learn, and grow. While this shift may have seemed foreign 13 years ago, it has now become an integral part of our lives. Embracing technology allows us to adapt to the changing world and continue our journey of self-discovery.
Throughout my years as a yoga teacher, I have witnessed the transformative power of connection and community. The Soul Power Yoga community has shown me the hunger and eagerness to grow and evolve. As we embark on this podcast journey together, I hope to create a space where we can connect, learn, and support one another. Through these conversations, we can explore various aspects of life, from becoming better yoga teachers to stepping into our power as humans.
As we embark on this new journey together, it is important to celebrate the beginning. Each new beginning holds immense power and potential. It is an opportunity for growth, transformation, and self-discovery. By embracing the power of being present, we can navigate the uncertainties of life and find our path to peace, joy, and empowerment.
In conclusion, the power of being present is a central theme that runs through my personal journey and the teachings of yoga. Through this podcast, I hope to share insights, wisdom, and experiences that will empower and inspire you on your own path of self-discovery. Together, let us embrace the power of being powerfully present and embark on a transformative journey of growth and empowerment.
Namaste.
